The Ebbsfleet Landmark Project is a public art venture commissioned by London Continental Railways, Eurostar, and Land Securities and is part of the cultural plan for Ebbsfleet Valley designed and implemented by Futurecity. The Landmark will serve as a defining symbol of the local area and a welcoming site to those arriving on the Eurostar.
The website (designed by Hat-Trick Design Consultancy) was built (by us) to showcase the proposals of the five short-listed artists. Using flash animation where relevant, the website gives the public a presentation of the artists proposals, an introduction to the judging panel, an overview of the area in Kent where the sculpture will sit, and a message board where the community can feedback their opinions to the panel. Information about the exhibition at the Blue Water Leisure Centre, where the artists'' proposals can be seen in person, is also available on the website, and the community feedback mechanism is integrated to include comments from those who have seen the proposals both on and offline.
The purpose and functionality of the Ebbsfleet Landmark website will change as the project progresses. Flash elements will be combined with HTML to make it flexible enough for integration with our Content Management System. When the artist is chosen, and the website becomes dedicated to following the build of the sculpture, time-lapse photography and fly-throughs will be used to allow the community to follow the landmark's progression. The Ebbsfleet Landmark website is an example of how the community can be positively engaged in a process from the outset. Whilst the site functions as a showcase for the artists, it really is an open communication channel between those facilitating the project and the community who will host this public art in their space.
